MUSIC

The oldest and finest forms of human expression is MUSIC. Representing the most ancient literature is Vedas known to the world, are set to a distinctive melody that has been passed down through the centuries in an unbroken oral tradition. Being an abstract art form there are many definitions given to music. Invisible lines and colours of sound on the canvas of silence is a painting of a Music .Music is what we feel from the heart.. Music is like an in exhaustive spring and infinite space. There is music in cosmic breath. The waves of oceans, the embrace of bamboo branches, vibrations of atoms and heartbeats: music is omni present. Music can be divided into Western classical, Hindustani classical, Carnatic classical, folk, Jazz, Pop Music, Fusion, etc. Of these there can be further identification of Vocal and Instrumental music. Within instrumental there can be differentiation of percussive instruments as well as wind and string instruments. In India, the arts have been classified by the scriptures into two major streams known as margi and desi that can be roughly translated as classical and folk. Numerous texts such as the Sangeeta Ratnakara of Saarangadeva lay down the basic tenets of classical music.

The two major systems of classical music today are the Hindustani and the Carnatic. Though today they appear in diferent styles, they in fact have their origins in a common theory and source as is apparent from ancient treatises.

Godsmack IV Rock Music CD Review

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Godsmack, very talented Rock group have released their latest album titled IV and Wow! It’s good.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with IV. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

IV has a pleasantly varied, mix of 11 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly talented musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.

Overall IV is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Rock collection. Truly an outstanding Rock CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 3 - The Enemy, track 6 - No Rest For The Wicked, and track 11 - One Rainy Day

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Live In Sin. Wow!

IV Release Notes:

Godsmack originally released IV on April 25, 2006 on the Universal Records label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Live In Sin 2. Speak 3. Enemy, The 4. Shine Down 5. Hollow 6. No Rest For The Wicked 7. Bleeding Me 8. Voodoo Too 9. Temptation 10. Mama 11. One Rainy Day

Godsmack: Sully Erna (vocals, various instruments); Tony Rombola (guitar); Robbie Merrill (bass guitar); Shannon Larkin (drums). Recording information: Spiral Recording, Hollywood, CA.

60 Female House Songs for Cabaret and Musicals Singers

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

You’re a singer looking for great audience songs for women. Have you thought about a “House song” from a Musical?
A House song bridges the gap between the audience and the singer, when the character comes out of the story on stage and speaks directly to the viewers, know that he (and the drama) is being watched.
In Musical theater there are not many real House songs, but there are a number of songs you can alter to make your performance cross that invisible fourth wall between you and the audience.
In this article I suggest 60 songs for women from the Musical Theater repertoire that could be sung as a House song. They fall into three categories: the true House song, the audience number and the soliloquy.
In the first category, the true House song, the musical is written deliberately for the character to step out of the drama and speak to the viewers. Think of Diva’s Lament from Spamalot, or You Can Always Count On Me from City of Angels. When You’re Good To Mama from Chicago springs to mind immediately. Other true House songs include Big Spender from Sweet Charity (originally a chorus number but can be sung by one person), I’m Still Here from Follies, Broadway Baby from Follies, I Just Wanna Dance from Jerry Springer, Jonny One Note from Babes in Arms, and Nobody Does It Like Me - the Cy Coleman song from the musical SeeSaw. And Miss Byrd from Closer Than Ever shares her secret across the fourth wall.
Many of the songs from the Victorian Music Hall era work as house numbers including Waiting At the Church, If It Wasn’t For the ‘Ouses In Between, and even ballads such as The Boy I Love Is Up In The Gallery. Then there are the songs written in a Musical style such as Girl in 14G, and The Alto’s Lament.
In the second category, the character sings to an audience in her world as part of the plot. Good and Evil from Jekyll and Hyde is a great example as Lucy sings to the drinkers in the pub where she works. Then there’s Don’t Cry For Me Argentina (Evita), I Speak Six Languages from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Beat Out Dat Rhythm from Carmen Jones, Man Wanted from Copacabana, and Blow Gabriel Blow from Anything Goes. The Saga Of Jenny from Lady in the Dark is sung in a courtroom, and you might just get away with Life of the Party from Wild Party.
The unifocus song is the third type of House number - it’s usually a soliloquy in which the character is asking questions. One of the most well-known songs is I Cain’t Say No from Oklahoma. Then there’s I’m Shy from Once Upon A Mattress, Everybody Says Don’t, and There Won’t Be Trumpets, from Anyone Can Whistle, and I’m A Stranger Here Myself from One Touch of Venus. Check out Holding To The Ground from Falsettos, My Brother Lived In San Francisco from Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens, I Hate Men from Kiss Me Kate, and My Strongest Suit from Aida. For the more old-fashioned amongst you, there’s I Think I May Want To Remember Today from Starting Here, Starting Now, Tale of the Oyster (Fifty Million Frenchmen), and The Physician (Nymph Errant).
You can use a strong story song like Waiting For The Music To Begin (Witches of Eastwick) if you use it to tell the audience your story. Another perfect example comes from A Chorus Line, where Diana Morales sings Nothing to Zach who is seated in the (real) audience throughout the show. It’s therefore very easy to turn it into a house number and address the audience directly and individually. Other songs include Gimme Gimme from Thoroughly Modern Millie, I Know Things Now from Into the Woods, Defying Gravity from Wicked, and Always The Bridesmaid from I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
Back to Sondheim again for The Ladies Who Lunch from Company, The Story of Lucy and Jessie (from certain productions of Follies), and Can That Boy Foxtrot (a duet that can be sung as a solo) from Marry Me A Little, or cut from Follies, depending on who you read.
Then there’s Everybody’s Girl from Steel Pier, Old Fashioned Love Story from Wild Party, When You Got It, Flaunt It from The Producers, and How Did I End Up Here from Romance Romance. You might consider One Hundred Easy Ways from Wonderful Town, or My New Philosophy from You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, and experiment with a song like Cockeyed Optimist from South Pacific.
Another great source of House songs is the revue musical. Closer Than Ever by Maltby and Shire is a good example for songs like Back On Base, or The Bear, The Tiger, The Hamster and The Mole. Or you could consider Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown for I’m Not Afraid Of Anything. You can also do what the musicals are doing currently and raid the pop/disco/rock scene for suitable songs - Holding Out For A Hero started as a Bonnie Tyler song but is now in both Footloose and Shrek II
It is unusual for a slower song to work as a house number, but here are a few suggestions: Maybe I Like It This Way from Wild Party, That’s Him from One Touch Of Venus, Why Him from Carmelina, Bill (from Oh Lady! Lady! and versions of Showboat) and of course, Funny Girl from Funny Girl.
Remember that the point of a House song is to speak directly to the viewers, so make sure you look your audience in the eye while you perform.
Enjoy.

It’s Possible to Get Tickets to Wicked on Broadway!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

There are two girls. One is beautiful, ambitious, and loved by everyone. The other is fiery with green skin, and misunderstood by people. Two different ladies with one designation, witches!

We are talking about “Wicked”, the record-breaking Broadway show that’s been running successfully for four long years. What happens when the Wicked Witch of the West meets Glinda, the Good Witch in the Land of Oz? Well, this isn’t exactly a suspense thriller, but a spooky entertainer, with an interesting plot woven in a series of gripping scenes!

Joe Mantello, the director of this show, and Winnie Holzman, the book writer, have managed to create a legend, at last! And why not. When you have such a talented team of artists, ready to burn the midnight oil for creating a perfect scenario for the story, there can be nothing better than “Wicked”!

The star cast of the show is no less. There is Julia Murney playing the role of Elphaba and Kendra Kassehaum playing the role of Glinda, the good witch. Both have stunned the audience with their impeccable performances. Lenny Wolpe and Sebastian Arcelus can be seen as The Wizard and Fiyero, respectively. Nobody can say they are actually acting; they look so real! The other actors who have impressed the audience are Jane Houdyshelll as Madame Morrible; Cristy Candler in the role of Nessarose; Logan Lipton as Boq; and Steven Skybell playing the role of Doctor Dillamond. Without the marvelous expression of their acting skills, this show would not have reached the zenith of success.

The story of witches might look predictable. But, when one of them has an emerald green skin with a merciless heart and the other is extremely beautiful with an equally beautiful mind, the story becomes a thriller! Moreover, when two witches with different attitudes meet on the same land, there is greater excitement waiting to happen! And this is what “Wicked” is all about.

Perhaps, that’s why such a familiar story revolving around witch craft has achieved a colossal success and is on its way to create history for becoming the highest grosser on Broadway!

Theatre fans have seen “wicked” for their love of watching shows; people, who don’t give a damn to theatres, have seen it on account of curiosity; and the remaining few, who have not seen this show, are repenting! However, there’s still chance to watch this show, as it’s still running in New York theatres. It simply refuses to come down!

Forget box offices, if you want to get tickets. They are packed. The only way to get tickets is calling the ticketing service number and ordering your choice show tickets. If you are lucky, you might even get front row seats. However, lady luck is quite hard to please!

Even if lady luck doesn’t show a soft corner for you, there are still chances to get tickets for back seats at least. Wherever you sit, the important thing is that you should be able to enter the theatre. Don’t miss “Wicked” at any cost!

Wicked Has Become the Yellow Brick Road to Box Office Gold

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The hottest most sold out New York theater event in a long time, the production of Wicked is selling out tickets, gaining fans and driving Internet ticket sales through the roof. Why? Why? and I will ask again…why? The fascinating story of the original “Wizard Of Oz” is kept alive on Broadway, Wicked tells the story well before Dorothy ever steps foot on the yellow brick road, well before Kansas is even hit by a tornado and well before Toto becomes a house hold name.

Wicked begins it’s storyline well before any of these event, a matter of fact it begins with the youth of what will become the “Witches of Oz,” focusing on how these two friends left school and headed to the Emerald forest, how they met the Wizard and how they separated into two different directions, good and evil. The characters really tell a deeper story of the American concept of good and evil and how it relates into our society today.

Wicked on Broadway in the Theater District of New York stars a new cast of the following, Shoshana Bean, Megan Hilty, Ben Vereen, RueMcClanahan, David Ayers, Michelle Federer, Jeffrey Kuhn, William Youmans. there was an original cast to the show which has been replaced.

Winning the praises of critics and audiences alike, with a somewhat weak musical score compared to other venues on the famed Broadway theater district in the heart of New York, what you get here is the “prequel” the original “Wizard of Oz” which is fascinating in itself. If you are a fan of the original, then Wicked is a must see for you. The production is enduring great success at the Gershwin Theatre and will be running through 2006. Wicked Broadway tickets average around eighty-five dollars and sell out often.

If you are looking for a great night out on the town, or are a big fan of the original Wizard of Oz this is a show which cannot be missed. Not only will you learn of all the events which lead to the characters of the Wizard of Oz, you will find yourself captivated by the differences of the witches and how they grow to head in such separate direction. The show goes much deeper then a theater production, it dives right into the hearts of it’s characters and how they relate to our perceptions of good and evil in society today.

Music by Stephen Schwartz Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, under the direction of Joe Mantello you can’t go wrong with this already huge hit on Broadway, so make some fun dinner plans in the big city and catch this most talked about Broadway theater event of the year.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

There are many people who look at posters to make sure that the play they have chosen will provide them with an idea of how much fun they will have watching the play. Now in general the posters for plays are full of fun and adventure. There some posters which depict another side to the gentle plays. You will find that these wicked posters are full of life.

The posters are shown in glorious colors and they show how the words of the play can be used to tempt us to see the play. Broadway shows which use these posters have an advantage to them. The wicked posters will be shown in full color, however as they can be seen by the public you will find that these posters are tastefully depicted. The artists who provide the theaters with these posters use the information which is provided.

From this information they draw the poster of the play. Sometimes the wicked poster look comes into play based on the information that these artists are given. Now while the producers and directors of these plays don’t want their plays to be listed as being unsuitable for the public they still want their play to show the wicked aspect of the play.

You will find that in addition to being displayed on the walls of a theater a wicked poster can be found in gift shops in the theater itself. Additionally you have the chance of looking for rare posters on the internet. The many different posters which are for sale can be laminated, glossy or just shown on colored board.

Now you might find that buying a laminated poster is more expensive than the usual ones. There is however an advantage to buying one of these posters. The advantage that you will find in buying wicked posters is that of they will last for many years. Additionally you get to see and relive the memories of the play when you buy such posters.

A wicked poster can be a great gift to someone who collects musical show posters, movie posters and many others. To make the gift even more special you might want to look at the different posters from various times. A wicked poster is the best gift to find if you like seeing how the tastes in entertainment change through the years.
