Question About The Book And Musical Wicked?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I just saw Wicked the musical and thought is was a musical about Athiesm and their view of Christianity.
Wicked witch = Athiest, she learned from the Goat teacher which may have been Lucifer. They placed animals on the same level as humans.
Oz = God who was a fraud that was banished back to the other world or demension. Also, OZ used thebig scary head and voice because that is what the people wanted.
The people of OZ = were mindless christians just wanting to be happy.
Glinda = turns a blind eye to reality for the glory of man
I was wondering if this is what the book is like also.

Top 10 Must-See Broadway Plays and Musicals

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

To see a Broadway play or musical is to step into a world that envelops you with an experience you cannot find anywhere else. Theatre has been around since ancient times and for good reason. There is absolutely nothing like watching the actors, hearing the live musical scores and going on a journey with fellow theatre-goers. It makes movies seem like flimsy comic books in comparison.
Fortunately, there are many excellent shows on Broadway and in major cities across North America today. The following list is the top ten plays you might consider attending with a date or a friend. Each one of these delivers an experience you won’t soon forget.
One of the most popular mega-hits of Broadway is Wicked. Wicked is a musical taking the witches from the Wizard of Oz and recasting them to reverse the loyalties the audience feels in the movie. The play follows the women from school to their eventual fates. The emerald skinned Elphaba, studious and misunderstood, and the beautiful and ambitious Glinda, as they move from unlikely friends to the classic opponents of the movie. The magic lies in the witty recasting of the backstory of the Wizard of Oz, to challenge assumptions and present a tale of friendship and love. And now Wicked is touring the U.S., so there’s a good chance it’s showing in a city near you.
A relatively new show called Tarzan, is a musical about a baby raised by gorillas as he encounters humans, and Jane, forcing him to choose between his two heritages. Tarzan is very popular, with many theatergoers looking forward to seeing the Disney version brought to stage. A show for all ages, the search for where one belongs in the world is a weighty subject for such a deceptively light show. Phil Collins extended his musical score from the Disney movie into a complete theatrical score.
The Lion King is a musical about Simba the lion cub and his journey to adulthood and acceptance as King. A play for all ages, the story of a youth growing to accept responsibility and duty is one of the most enduring themes in fiction. The animal puppetry is nothing less than brilliant. If you’re looking to instill a little culture in your child, this may be just the ticket. And again, The Lion King is showing in many cities.
A disfigured musical genius haunts a theatre and exerts a mysterious control over a young singer. The Phantom of the Opera is a modern classic musical, long-standing show and one of the most well known Broadway plays of the era. The classic music of the show is one of the main draws, with more than one piece from this show recognizable to almost any adult. This is the longest running play in Broadway history, and made Andrew Lloyd Webber a household name. Phantom of the Opera has played in 22 countries, 113 cities and to a combined audience of 10 million.
Les Miserables is a musical based on the classic novel of the same name, in which the obsessed policeman Javert pursues the prison escapee Jean Valjean over decades in Revolutionary France. A classic tale of obsession and redemption, this play investigates the big questions like right and wrong, vengeance and justice, and what it takes to achieve redemption, while putting a human face on the issues. Les Miserable originally ran on Broadway for sixteen years, and is back with a fresh cast to renew the magic.
Spamalot is based on the legendary Monty Python and the Holy Grail, featuring King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they face such dangers as the dreaded bunny rabbit. The occasionally eccentric Monty Python sense of humor is in full fury in this tale, with jabs at politics, religion, chivalry, bravery, intelligence and the French. There are limbless knights, men in tights and a chorus line of dancing divas. Spamalot is a favorite of audiences and critics alike, and won the 2005 Tony for Best Musical. If you liked the Monty Python’s TV show and movies, then this musical will sure to please.
Chicago the Musical is another famous musical, in this case about a murder trial. The Fosse choreography is iconic. While the music isn’t as iconic as some others, the odds are that most will recognize several pieces they’ve heard before, such as “Razzle-Dazzle” and “All that Jazz.” Chicago returns us to the time of Vaudeville, satirizes the justice system and shows us what great theater is all about. Definitely check this show out of you liked the movie starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere.
Rags to rock to riches, Jersey Boys is the musical story of four blue-collar boys who become the Four Tops. It follows them from their start in the Hood to their apotheosis as one of the greatest music groups of all time, with emphasis on the characters involved. This show has really taken off and become unexpectedly popular on Broadway. Now the Jersey Boys is touring America.
Mamma Mia! is a musical built around Abba staples of the seventies, dealing with a single mother whose daughter is about to get married on a Greek island. The daughter invites three of her mother’s old boyfriends to visit, hoping to find out which one her father is. The play is built around Abba music, but is an engaging story in its own right and is advanced by the music rather than providing an excuse for it. This is a play where almost everyone attending knows the music.
Rent is a musical that explores poverty, disease, and drugs in New York City. It’s a modern rock version of the 19th century Italian opera “La Boheme,” and is set in New York City’s East Village. It is a moving musical where young people strive to make it in a difficult world.
Plays are one of the most enduring human entertainments, and Broadway is the big leagues in an art form thousands of years old. Plays speak of where we come from, where we are, and where we would like to be. If you want to do something different and you value culture, entertainment and enlightenment, going to a Broadway play is something you may want to experience soon.

From the same production crew who brought the must see Broadway masterpiece Les Miserables come a theater experience which is not to be missed! The Hilton Theatre will be the venue for the new musical adventure “The Pirate Queen.” The story is created from the true history of Grace O’Malley, an Irish Chieftain with a legendary reputation. The Pirate Queen opened in April of 2007 and is considered an anticipated event for anyone who loves theater, musicals and adventure. The Pirate Queen tickets are selling out fast with premium seating for popular evening running over two hundred and fifty dollars.

The Storyline

This is a love story set in Ireland which warms the heart and bring the senses to life. Focusing around O’Malley who takes on many roles such as a mother, a pirate, a chieftain and a love interest, all in the exiting times of the 16th century. Her history is strong as both a historic figure for women as well as for Ireland as she was one of the last to resist the English conquering of Gaelic Ireland. Her strength and resilience comes through very powerfully on the stage and her devotion and will against another strong and fierce woman leader of the time, Queen Elizabeth I of England, creates a conflict which makes this production an amazing experience.

The Credits

The Pirate Queen boast a trio of writers who already are well know names to most who love theater in New York City, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Richard Malthy, Schonberg and Boublil were the writing team for the unbelievably successful Les Miserables which became a main stay on Broadway with over 6,000 performances and is currently enjoying a revival with a limited run. Moya Doherty and John McClogan are credited with the production of the show and again we have two names which are no strangers to Broadway theater, these two have the same credits for “Riverdance.” Stephanie J. Block is the actor who plays the lead role and once again someone with amazing Broadway experience. She garnered critical acclaim for her role as Liza Minneli which was from the show “The Boy From Oz” and this performance was her debut. Ms. Block’s most recent role is that of Elphaba in the huge hit musical “Wicked” in which she was part of the tour which traveled and performed around the nation. With a team and lineup like this it is no wonder why many are flocking to purchase The Pirate Queen tickets.

The Pirate Queen Tickets

When looking to purchase The Pirate Queen tickets the most safe and legitimate option is to call the box office of the Hilton Theatre and ask what is available. If these options prove to not work, the next best option would be the use of an online ticket broker. These tickets will cost a bit more money, but are guaranteed legitimate and can be mailed overnight for any event.

Isn’t it a wonder how only the good guys in movies and novels get remembered and how only the heroes get their own stories? Why don’t the bad guys get the same thing even though their depicted characters are sometimes much better written or well-presented than the hero/heroine. Besides, the baddies have lives too! Well…that’s what novelist Gregory Maguire thought when he penned the award-winning, best-selling novel titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It is a parallel story to L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. The novel is set mostly before Dorothy, the lead character from the Wizard of OZ and shows the Land of OZ from the perspective of the witches. The musical Wicked is a two stage act which tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her love-hate relationship with her fellow witch Galinda, the Good Witch of the North. The musical shows how their unique friendship blossoms, yet faces a myriad of difficulties because of their differences, their contrasting personalities and ways of thinking, their odd love triangle with the same love-interest, their varied responses to the corrupt government of the Wizard of OZ and finally the noteworthy decline of Elphaba. The play includes many scenes and dialogues from the first Wizard of OZ film and makes many references to the same. The whole concept came about when Stephen Schwartz came across the novel while on holiday in 1995 and realized that what a well-written book had an even bigger hidden potential to become a stage show or musical and in 1998 Schwartz met Maguire and bought the rights for the stage production. It took over a year for Schwartz who collaborated with the Emmy Award-winning writer Winnie Holzman to develop the plot and initial drafts and the lyrics and original score were also developed while scripting. By April 2003, the cast was complete and the show ready to hit Broadway. The Broadway musical show Wicked debuted on 30th October 2003. Being a Universal Pictures production, it is a star-studded show directed by Joe Mantello. Even though the show received mixed reviews and The New York Times even dumped the idea altogether saying it would flop horribly, the musical proved the opposite and turned out to be a real success and is a much loved favorite among all who come to the show. Wicked musical show tickets get sold out fast and cheap online tickets to Wicked can be booked online. You can get discounted tickets to the Wicked Broadway musical show with little searching online. The Wicked theatre production has now made it to Chicago, Los Angeles, London’s West End, Tokyo (Japan), Melbourne (Australia) and Stuttgart in Germany. There have been two Wicked musical show tours too - in the United States and Canada - that went to more than 30 cities.

How Would You Rate The Musical “wicked!”?

I recently heard some of the music from the Broadway musical “Wicked!” and am planning to see it when it swings by Houston in 2007 (a long ways away, I know). I was wondering if it rated a set of $110 prime seats or not?

Wicked Tickets Take you to a World of Fantasy

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

The spectacular musical “Wicked” is based on the novel “Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witches of the West” by Gregory Maguire. He creates a fantasy world where animals talk and there are many imaginary characters like the Munchkins. He makes it all sound so real and vivid. The main story is based on the Wicked Witches of the famous novel “The Wizard of Oz”.

The story deals with the witches lives much before Dorothy arrives in Oz. The protagonist is Elphaba, a little girl with green skin who grows up to become the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wizard believes that Elphaba is a wicked witch and makes everyone believe him. The truth is that she is just a smart little girl who has been greatly misunderstood. She shows the audience a whole new concept of good and evil. The Wizard due to his beliefs eventually leads the little green girl to become the Wicked Witch. Glinda, the Good Witch, is beautiful and is considered to be much superior. The meeting of Glinda and Elphaba starts the play.

The characters of the play are mostly the same as the ones in the Wizard of Oz. You have the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Wizard himself. The play contains simplified parts of the novel and is not the entire story of the novel. It is a spectacular show of colorful costumes, lovely music and humorous dialogues. It entertains children and adults alike.

The musical “Wicked” is being staged at many of the top theatres in the country. They have shows in Chicago, New York and Boston. With a star cast of Ben Vereen, Rue McClanahan, Shoshana Bean and Megan Hilty, the Land of Oz is brought to life and the audience is kept enthralled throughout the show. The music is by Academy Award winner Stephen Shwartz and lyrics are by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento. The director, Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, has breathed life into the story and has made the “Wicked” one of the most magnificent musicals of the year.

The play took over two years to materialize and it involved over 150 people to get it together. The set took over a year and a half to make in Calgary, Ontario. Once it was ready, it had to be transported all the way to the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. The initial production cost was 14 million dollars but it more than recovered the cost in the first year itself by grossing 56 million dollars. It proved to be a theatrical masterpiece and a super hit.

The “Wicked” has been playing to full house audiences every week and is being staged in many cities. Fans are thronging to the theatres to behold this spectacular production. Getting hold of “Wicked” tickets is tough and you should probably contact the box office as soon as you know tickets are being sold. In case you are unable to get tickets at the box office, then you need to look at other options like online ticket sales.
